I think Rainier Cherries are the most beautiful fruit.

I was just surfing on the world wide web and stumbled, yes stumbled, on this gorgeous picture of Rainier Cherries. I am trying to find a fruit tree I just can't live without to put right against the back of my house. Would cherry be a good choice for this?

The fruit look beautiful, but I expect you would have to net the tree to stop birds from pinching the fruit. You should also find out how big the tree will be when fully-grown.

Thanks Mark. If I could find a dwarf Rainier...hmmm, it would be easier to net. My garden brain just totally took over and I pictured the dwarf cherry fanning out on the wall. Permanent hooks around the tree on the wall. I could hop up on a ladder and just loop the net edge on the hooks and pull tightish to keep it tight against the wall. Yup, my brain just totally flew off on its own there.

Erin, I grow Rainier Cherries near Seattle, and while birds do eat them, they tend to hit the red cherries first. The big orchards are on the east side of the Cascades with hot summers and cold winters and ample irrigation. Luckily they also produce for me over here on the rainy side of the mountains, though much smaller in size. Here's a look at them: http://www.tallcloverfarm.com/320/growing-cherries-the-size-of-apricots-or-not Good luck and happy new year!

I was just going to warn of the birds getting there first and Mark beat me to it! They love sweet cherries! If your wall gets a lot of warm sunshine, you could espalier a peach tree against the house. You can also control the height of a tree by asking the mature height of the rootstock that it's grafted on to and by pruning carefully in it's formative years. (Erin, see if you can get a copy of the Fruit Tree Handbook which I've just reviewed, it will answer a lot of your questions!) Caro x

Thank you Tom and Caro. I am going to plant a Rainier Cherry and I'm going to go read your review of the book Caro. Bloggers are the most helpful people I've ever met. I appreciate the advice so much.
